Mason's Sunshine
I've always marveled at my sweet boy's artwork. In preschool they told me he did
"not like to color". His teachers were very concerned. He told me he didn't like it because he had a hard time getting his crayons to go where he wanted them to go. He could not stay in the lines. I've been encouraged to get him art lessons. I've been told the other kids will make fun him.
If he doesn't like to color, so what? Sometimes coloring ISN'T fun---especially when you can't color things the way you want to or you have to stay in the pre-drawn lines. I've always encouraged him to just do his best and I've fiercely sheltered his little spirit when it comes to art.
As with most things, Mason is also self-conscious about his artwork. You can see from the pictures that he has his own little super-happy, bulbous style. His drawings look cave-man-like compared to those of his 9 year old peers. I'd rather see his artwork look like this, his style. It's a great opportunity to teach him the beauty, the inherent value of doing things the way he was created to do them.
For the first time ever, on Tuesday, Mason told me he really likes art.

Mason was so proud to show me his monster on the wall in the hall at school. Instead of doing the usual, he made the whole circle into the mouth--teeth all around it and a tongue sticking out of the middle! (He told me he put a cotton ball under the tongue so it would stick out.) He thought his monster was WAY better than the others. I thought so, too.
I love hearing this story. Kellie always struggled with art....but sadly never had that moment (to my knowledge) that she felt good about it. Children should be able to enjoy their "creations." Thanks for sharing Mason's story.
oh sweet mason. yay! i'm glad he is enjoying art! my mom is right, i was never confident about any sort of art i did in school. i never enjoyed it (probably for that reason). i'm so glad mason is getting more confident and enjoying it! some siblings just get all the art genes (AKA ERIN!) :)
