Dearest Octopus,
Your name reminds me of Doc Oc from the comics. Sorry if that insults you.
Let me explain: About six months ago I wrote down a funny thought in my journal. It says, "Maybe I'll emerge a superhero". You know how freakish things happened to people in comic books---freakish things that normal people wouldn't survive? Surely you remember spider bites, computer programs gone wrong, big vats of day-glo goo, etc.
It's been a freakish sort of year for me and I'm still waiting to see if I emerge a superhero.
Anyhow, I took this photo for you (in China---see blue square in photo) because I know you've been through a lot and I like to think you've emerged a superhero...it means I have a chance to do the same.
Your friend,
Melanie-Pearl
ps) I hope I get a cape. I know it catches on things, but I'd feel a lot cooler with a cape.

i would say the cape is a must.
Dear octopus. who you are i do not now, but you are an inspiration to all of us. thanks for this.
matches, you would genuinely like Octopus. i've always been inspired by him...even when he was 17 and i was already old to him, busy being a mom, making him white pizza cheese dip and crostini, etc. he's several years younger than me but he's always had wisdom beyond his years.
maybe you'll meet some day if he comes down this way on a Saturday...if he dares darken the door of a church again. if anyone could convince him to do so, maybe you could....
(Octopus, you'd like Matches. i'm certain you'd even like our church, too.)
