The cool colors rescind while the warm colors dominate and do their job.
White or black surround these cubes of primary contrast. Two of the cubes pop out---one of the cubes is lost in space.
These color studies will probably irk the foo out of anyone with a firm grasp on composition. I guess that's the next book I have to study. Still, I like it that composition is an afterthought---almost non-existent to these contrast studies. Without trying, I confirm my love of the surreal, the uneasy edge of pushing the rules.
As with color, as with music, as with most things---once learned one can never go back. Still, I hunger for the formal art "rules" even if it's just so I can eventually break them. Once I'm done studying color I fear I won't be able to go back to the surprise of my own (sometimes happy!) accidents on canvas; instead I'll be making decisions about colors and deciding whether or not to break the "rules". I guess that's why I'm glad I saved some of my old work. I can always go back and remind myself to paint with spontaneity. Time will tell which pieces are "better".
