Polished Mokume Gane

Thought I'd show you what the Mokume Gane looks like in a high polish finish. Aunt K commissioned me to make her two sets of these rings. I struggled and struggled with them to make the finish perfect.

I began by using a jeweler's saw, something I haven't used since my first day in silversmithing. The sawing action is very unnatural for me, so I usually just cut the edges with the tin snips. Since I wanted invisible seams on these I finally purchased and used a saw. I found that sawing takes more time and precision, but the clean-up (filing and bevelling) is easier.

I did saw into my index finger pretty good once. Guess I need that bench pen after all. Still, though the seams are not invisible, they are the best I've made to date. I also bought a set of sanding sticks from Pracht's and cleaned up the inside as well as the outside.

I'm going to patina the middle ring yet. Just thought it looked pretty all shiny.

These are so gorgeous! And, I think you need to protect your fingers in every way possible.
