A friend asked me to make one of these for a special someone in his life. He wanted an inscription on the inside of the ring. I hammered the letters on the back side of the mokume gane piece and of course the letters warped through to the other side. I hammered the patterned side with my nylon head thinking I'd just flatten the front side out again. WRONG. So then I just ran with the hammered look...struck it with my brass head...and then I made another ring.
This time I used Grandpa Briscoe's old vibra-tool to inscribe by hand. The inscription isn't as sharp (I should have polished the inside before photographing) but the outside of the ring is much prettier. It's like the hammered look adds too much/takes away from the pattern. I wonder if you agree? Preference is a tricky thing.
Edit: My friend is just going to give both of them to her! What a thoughtful brother, no? It's for his sister's graduation. I'm honored.
