Honeycomb Color Studies
I've started a new series of paintings unlike anything I've ever done. These are learning paintings---and the subject is color contrast. The whole point is to study the color relationships/properties so that I will have more to consider when I sit down to paint a composition. I might end up hanging these on my wall just for reference. There will be at least 7 of them because, according to Itten, there are 7 color contrasts.
I start with the compass and draw out my hexagons. It makes really trippy patterns on the canvas that are sometimes hard to decipher. Then I choose colors and how to paint the honeycomb based on the contrast study.
I began all of this, of course, because of my studies for the Lent 'zine; it has been a rabbit hole experience. Anyhow, because I want to save some of the surprise for the 'zine, I'll just point out a few of the mysteries of the studies. Even if you dislike the honeycomb composition (a pattern I chose because of a page in the 'zine), consider the following:
There is a reason that two of the three color studies are more powerful than the one. See if your eye can determine which two work and which one doesn't. Why would I paint the same pattern different compositional (they share the same bones) according to the color scheme?
If you think you don't need to know because you don't paint, think again. The knowledge of these paintings could change the way you dress in the morning, the way you decorate your living space, the way you group jewelry. It could be the difference between something working and something (often frustratingly) not quite right. It is the difference between something accidentally coming together, and something planned coming together. It is the power of making an informed decision based on personal preference.
I'll answer the questions soon. For now it's time to get some shut-eye. It's sooo hard for me to stop in the middle of any painting...to know there are 5 more is quite preoccupying.
