I finally got my sample set of enamels from Thompson's today! Almost two weeks ago I ordered this smattering which includes a sample of every low-fire color they make.
Enamels look quite different before they are fired, depending upon what they are fired, how long they are left to fuse, etc. So, the first item of business for me is to make test strips of each color sample. (That way I'll know exactly what color(s) to order more of/to mix.) To some that might seem like a tedious undertaking; to me it's like a grand experiment! Heck, I had fun just sorting the raw colors.
Did you know that enamels are made from finely ground glass? Yup, it's why the colors can range from rich opaque to wonderfully gradient translucents. Of course I'll share my test strips when they are done.
ps)I also got my Wizard metal hole punch, so I've already punched my first two disks upon which I'll enamel for dangly earrings. Maybe I'll cheat before the test strips and fire just a few pieces. :)
